Neighbourhood Watch

What is Neighbourhood Watch?

Neighbourhood Watch is about building community spirit and good relations, bringing together local people with common goals, tackling crime and disorder and keeping an eye out for one another and on each other’s property, working together as the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood, picking up and taking action on anything that could cause concern or worry. It is not about being a ‘nosy neighbour’ but about being a good citizen and caring for and supporting your community.

It's about building safer and stronger communities and working  together to improve those communities.

Neighbourhood Watch is a voluntary scheme where neighbours come together, along with the police and local partners, to build safe and friendly communities; by bringing neighbours together we create friendly active communities where crime and anti-social behaviour are less likely to happen.

The whole of Wilberfoss village is covered by a Neighbourhood Watch group with 6 coordinators covering different areas. Coordinators are there to help and advise residents about what to do in the event of a problem but, more importantly, to give advice on how to secure their homes and garage/sheds, as by taking simple precautions, the chances of burglary are vastly reduced. Wilberfoss is in the East Riding of Yorkshire which has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. Residents can become the eyes and ears of the police by reporting strange vehicles (make, reg. no., location) or people, which helps the police do their job better.

Your village coordinators are:

Wilberfoss Neighbourhood Watch is supervised by Dave Smith.  Please get in touch with Dave if you have a general enquiry.  The Group also has a Communications Office, Louise Ward.  If you have any written or photographic evidence that you would like to share with Wilberfoss Neighbourhood Watch please email Louise .

In 2011 Wilberfoss Neighbourhood Watch, working with East Riding Trading Standards, was successful in setting up the whole of the village as a No Cold Calling Zone. This has reduced the number of traders knocking on doors, most of whom are legitimate but very annoying; however some can be shady characters up to no good. The result is that we have seen a big reduction in cold callers and any that do come round are reported directly to East Riding Trading Standards for them to take action. If a cold caller comes to your door, find out as much information as possible such as – company name, telephone number, company office location, name of caller – then pass this on to your Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator who will feed it back to East riding Trading Standards who will write directly to the company.

If you are interested in joining the Wilberfoss Neighbourhood Watch coordinators, please contact your Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator
